THE PROCESS
To
get sugar there are two different process; one
of the them is the burning of sugar
cane and the other is a mechanical process. The purpose
is to identify
the benefits of them to select
the best one.
MECHANICAL PROCESS
Sowing
was done manually and furrow irrigation is done. Approximately 12 months later
comes to harvest, an activity that can be carried out mechanically, reaching
yields 20 to 30 tons per hour, or manually through the cut cane; it can be
green or burning cane.
Burning
sugar cane, cutter cuts two
to three tons per day, whereas if the cane is burned, yielding five to six tons
per day for cane cutter reached.
COST OF PRODUCTION OF
TRADITIONAL CANE (BURNING) AND MECHANIZED
In
the traditional production system (burning), most of the components reflect
higher costs compared to machining mainly due to the occupation of labor in
performing the work and the application of inputs.
The
impact of mechanization is reflected in the cost of production per ton of cane
that reduced 10.7% ($ 43 / t), going to 400/357 ton / ton
- Minimal environmental impact
- Reduced process times
- Improvement in the structure and fertility of soils
- Lower water requirements
Burning process:
- Job offers
- Eliminate danger of snakes
- Remove the wasp attack
- Remove weeds
- Increasing the yield of the cutters
DISADVANTAGES
Mechanical
process:
- Reduce catchment labor (unemployment)
- Abundant amount of agricultural residues
- Increases attack bees, scorpions and snakes
- Greater foreign matter content
- Loss of stems
Burning process:
- Environmental pollution
- High costs for labor
- Accidents (in the cutters or accidental burning of nearby areas)
- Occasional interruptions in the lines near the cane fields high voltage
CONCLUSION
The mechanization of harvesting processes of sugar cane allows to reduce production costs per ton, reduce environmental impact, minimize operating time and facilitates the management of harvest residues raising the possibility of using this waste in manufacturing. Other products such as paper and biofuels, which will allow the company to be competitive can be produced and therefore the company will have more market participation.
